Homeland Security Today, in partnership with The International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism and the U.S. Department of Justice is pleased to bring to you its latest innovative training - Understanding and Responding to Hate Crimes in the Context of University Protests. Dr. Anne Speckhard, Director of the ICSVE, will be sharing knowledge and experience regarding hate crimes in the context of university protests, defining what constitutes a hate crime, insights into why offenders commit them as well as address specifically how university administrators, policy makers, parents and law enforcement can work to prevent student protest hate crimes, and help our communities to stay safe. 

Certificates of attendance will be issued for those who take part in the pre and post-quizzes required by the Department of Justice.

ABOUT DR. SPECKHARD: 

Anne Speckhard, Ph.D., is Director of the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism (ICSVE). She serves as Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine and is an Affiliate in the Center for Security Studies, Georgetown University. She has interviewed over 800 terrorists, violent extremists, their family members and supporters around the world, including in Western Europe, the Balkans, Central Asia, the Former Soviet Union and the Middle East. Over the past five years, she has conducted in-depth psychological interviews with 273 ISIS defectors, returnees and prisoners, as well as 16 al Shabaab cadres (as well as family members and ideologues,) studying their trajectories into and out of terrorism, and their experiences inside ISIS and al Shabaab.
